I am Asian, so what?

Yesterday I went to Romexpo for checking out some construction material in the Construct Expo Ambient exhibition. This week, we're supposed to finalize all the distributors and the design so we can start to renovate the house.

Well, things were going well, cause I found quite many useful information, starting from finding good parchet, carpet and even natural stones. But along the searching, there were two stands that really pissed me off.

Before I tell you further, I want you to know that I am writing here, so the organizer could think of good solution of not agreeing companies that reject customers, the company owner or someone who cares will think twice to hire sales people like what I am about to tell.

Fist, Silver Decor stand (www.tapetdelux.ro). Truth is, we actually already checked their website and we found one of the wallpapers we like and we intended to buy. Even we already have them in the rendering design. When I saw that they are present with thousands many other options, I was thrilled. It was a chance to see other options. One of the sales guys came to me and helped me, he explained to me a bit, and then I told them that I found a type of wallpaper from their website and I want to see the sample. He was searching the sample of what I was looking for, but he said that they didn't have it in the exhibition. Then, he gave me brochure where the address of the showroom available, and asked me to come to their showroom. So I agreed, I took the brochure in my hand, and I asked him more questions. When I asked him more question, said that he doesn't speak well English and his colleague will help me. While I was waiting for his oher colleague to come, suddenly one of the guys (a bit older) grabbed my brochure and changed with another brochure (for Mavinni Mobili) which is nothing to do with what I asked or wallpaper. That asshole insisted not giving me the wallpaper brochure as if he didn't want me to come to his showroom. Then, before I had the chance to confront him, the other sales woman came to me, she spoke English fluently, and she was kind enough to answer my questions. She even recommended several options for me. She handed me again the brochure that the asshole took from me, and asked me again to come to the showroom. When she did that, that asshole screamed "Nu, don't give it to her, damn it" in Romanian. She ignored him, and she kept talking to me bla bla bla. I could hear that asshole ranting to the other colleagues that it's useless to give it to foreigner because we are not perfect customers.

Well, for the other guys in Silver Decor who helped me yesterday, thank you guys for your explanation, I really appreciate it. I still consider to buy from you, although you colleague is an asshole! I will ignore him as you ignore him. For the owner of Silver Delux, I think you should fire that guy, cause he clearly is not people person, racist and bad for your business. And if you, asshole, apparently is the owner of the store, then I just hope that your business will last with your attitude like that.

Period.

The second stand that I visited and pissed me off again is IMOROM STAR SRL (imoromstar.com). They have quite many jacuzzi and bathtub options in their stand, which indeed will help us to decide on choosing bathtub for our bathroom. I asked one of the stand ladies, but unfortunately she doesn't really speak English. She just gave me the brochure and a CD. I asked her if she has the list of price or business from someone that I can talk to, so I can get the pricelist. She went to the middle of the stand where there was this guy sitting, and some business cards next to him. She wanted to grab one of the business cards on the table, but this bald guy who I assumed the sales person, said to her not to give it to me. He said that it's already in the CD. I asked "where?" cause nothing there is written of the contact person. He replied "yes...yes...it's there" and waving his hand to gesture me to leave. I still couldn't believe his attitude and while I was still standing there, he said to the stand lady who tried to give me the business card "Don't pay attention on this Chinese girl, she is not going to buy. What is she going to buy? Will she buy bathtub and bring it back to China? hahaha"-in Romanian.

Well..... asshole, who stays at the IMOROM STAR SRL stand, I am really sorry for your little brain and limitation. I know you're an asshole, but humiliate one of the biggest nations, I think it just shows how completely illiterate you are. You're not just racist, but you're completely MORON. Fit you well there.....

I hope next time, the organizer of the event will tell their exhibitors that humiliating the visitors is not part of the deal. Put that in the contract, people!

Today is the last day of the exhibition. Cristi got really upset with these people who treated me bad yesterday. He will come with me today and confront them. I usually don't like when he does that, but this time, hell yes, I'll come again and confront them.

So Uncomfortable

I had two uncomfortable incidents last week.

First, it happened around 8 days ago when I was sitting alone in the subway on the way home. As usual, Pipera, place where I worked, was full with office workers but also construction workers because there are many new offices under constructions. I was in the middle of my daydream when then I saw this young Asian guy, approached me. He is probably at his 19th or maybe even younger, wearing dirty long pants, uneven sleeves shirt, without socks. Easily I could assume that he was working in one of those construction places. He avoided eye contacts, but when he came in front of me, he asked awkwardly to me "Excuse me, miss, are you Vietnamese?". It happened just so quickly before I was ready to say more than "no",  he replied "oh, thank you" and left immediately. It was heartbreaking I tell you. Maybe it was nothing, but I somehow felt awful because I think he came with a hope to meet someone that can speak his native language. I could understand how difficult it is to live in a country where you are minority in race. It doesn't mean that I am racist or something, but simply because the culture difference is too wide, and there is always a moment where you feel lonely, lost, and not knowing what to interpret and react from other people behaviors toward you.

Second incident happened last Thursday, when I was waiting for Cristi from office. We agreed to meet in Romana after work for snacks. Cristi, as always was late, and I decided to wait for him in the ceiling platform of the subway. The weather was nice, so I was kinda comfortable waiting there. Not that long, there was this middle aged guy, short, not sure what nationality, green shirt, red tie (d'uh...) and I assume that he is working for government or embassy because I can see the logo of something on his tie. This time I tried to avoid the eye contacts, cause I didn't feel like talking or disturbed considering that I was in the middle of the most crowded area in city. He passed in front of me, seemed like trying to scan me, and then he tried to say hello. I ignored cause he was really kinda creepy. He didn't stop there, he started to guess where I am from "China? Thailand? Vietnamese? Malaysia? Singapore? .....and more. I just said no, and still avoided eye contacts, with a hope that he'd leave me alone. But he didn't, he started to ask me again "But, you speak English, no?" and now he moved so he can get eye contacts exactly in front of me. I said " Yes, I can speak English". Good thing was I saw Cristi was coming from different direction, and I started to pack my stuff. Before I left, he said something like " I am from Egypt, it's very nice to meet you. I hope you have a nice day". I grabbed Cristi's hands and left. Cristi was asking if everything is OK, I knew  if I told him that I was uncomfortable, he would right away came to that guy and questioned him. I told him I was OK and we should leave. It seemed that he was annoying, right? but I somehow felt guilty because in my mind, he could have been a regular guy, lonely and tried to make friends. I have no idea...but it bothered me a bit, cause I felt guilty. Oh crikey....

What would you do if you were me?

Sigh....
